Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that prevents the body from utilizing glucose completely or partially. It is characterized by raised glucose concentration in the blood. The pancreas produce a hormone insulin which controls the amount of glucose in the blood. Without insulin, the blood sugar increases as the body cannot use or store glucose. The most commonly-used screening tests are the determination of the fasting blood glucose level and the blood glucose level tested two hours after a meal. The normal fasting blood sugar content is 80-120 mg per 100 ml of blood; this can go up to a level of 160 mg per 100 ml of blood two hours after meals. Anything above these levels can be termed as diabetic levels. Diabetes is common among older, obese people.

Types of Diabetes:
Type 1 or insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) occurs when the pancreas fails to make enough insulin. It usually occurs in childhood or adolescence but can develop at any age. These patients need insulin everyday.

Type 2 or non-insulin dependant diabetes mellitus occurs when body cells become resistant to insulin. This is more common among adults, especially those who are overweight and over age 40. These people are able to control their blood sugar levels through weight control, regular exercise and a well-balanced diet. Some people require oral medications or insulin injection to lower blood sugar.

Symptoms of Diabetes

Initial Symptoms

Increased thirst, increased urination, increased appetite are the initial symptoms.

In type 1 weight loss is seen and in type 2 obesity is seen.

Other Symptoms

Other possible symptoms are blurred vision, skin irritation or infection, weakness or loss of strength, and decreased healing capacity.

Clinical lab test data reveal glycosuria (sugar in urine), hyperglycaemia, abnormal glucose tolerance tests.

If diabetes is not diagnosed at the right time symptoms like fluid and electrolyte imbalance, acidosis, coma is seen.

Causes of Diabetes

Diabetes Mellitus Symptoms, Causes, Remedy and Diet

Cause for IDDM

IDDM mostly results from a virally initiated autoimmune destruction of beta cells of the pancreas.

Cause for NIDDM

NIDDM is determined genetically and is expressed with age or other factors like obesity, diet and inactivity.

Home Remedies for Diabetes

Diabetes Mellitus home remedies and natural cures, Questions and answers

Diabetes treatment using Bitter Gourd

Among the several home remedies that have proved beneficial in controlling diabetes, perhaps the most important is the use of bitter gourd. It has lately been established that bitter gourd contains a hypoglycaemic or insulin-like principle, designated as ‘plantinsulin’, which has been found valuable in lowering the blood and urine sugar levels. It should, therefore, be included liberally in the diet of the diabetic. For better results, the diabetic should take the juice of about four or five bitter gourd every morning on an empty stomach. The seeds can be added to food in a powdered form. Diabetics can also use bitter gourd in the form of a decoction by boiling the pieces in water or in the form of dry powder.

Diabetes treatment using Indian Gooseberry

Indian gooseberry, with its high vitamin C content, is considered valuable in diabetes. A tablespoon of its juice, mixed with a cup of bitter gourd juice, taken daily for two months, will stimulate the islets of Langerhans, that is, the isolated group of cells that secrete the hormone insulin in the pancreas. This mixture reduces the blood sugar in diabetes.

Diabetes treatment using Jambul Fruit

Black berry fruit is another effective home remedy. It is regarded in traditional medicine as a specific against diabetes because of its effect on the pancreas. The fruit as such, the seeds, and fruit juice are all useful in the treatment of this disease. The seeds contain a glucoside ‘jamboline’ which is believed to have the power to check the pathological conversion of starch into sugar in cases of increased production of glucose. The seeds should be dried and powdered. One teaspoon of this powder should be mixed in one cup of milk or water or half a cup of curd, and taken twice daily. The inner bark of the black berry tree is also used in the treatment of diabetes. The bark is dried and burnt. It will produce an ash of white colour. This ash should be pestled in mortar, strained and bottled. The diabetic patient should be given ten grams of this ash on an empty stomach with water in the morning, and twenty grams in the afternoon, and in the evening an hour after taking meals. An equal quantity of indian gooseberry powder, jamun powder, and bitter gourd powder also makes a very useful remedy for diabetes. A teaspoon of this mixture once or twice a day would be effective in checking the progress of the disease.

Diabetes treatment using Grapefruit

Grapefruit is a splendid food in the diet of a diabetic patient. If grapefruits were eaten more liberally, there would be much less diabetes. If you have sugar, use three grapefruits three times a day. If you do not have sugar, but a tendency towards it and want to prevent it, use three a day.

Diabetes treatment using Fenugreek

The seeds of fenugreek have been found effective in the treatment of diabetes. Fenugreek seeds, when given in varying doses of 25 gm to 100 gm daily, diminish reactive hyperglycaemia in diabetic patients. Levels of glucose, serum cholesterol, and triglycerides were also significantly reduced in the diabetes patients when the seeds were consumed.

Diabetes treatment using Bengal Gram

Experiments have shown that the intake of water extract of Chickpea enhances the utilization of glucose in both diabetic and normal persons. When kept on a diet which included liberal supplements of Chickpea extract, the condition of tile patient improved considerably and his insulin requirement was reduced to about twenty units per day. Diabetes patients who are on a prescribed diet which does not severely restrict the intake of carbohydrates, but includes liberal amounts of Chickpea extract, have shown considerable improvement in their fasting blood sugar levels, glucose tolerance, urinary excretion of sugar, and general condition.

Diabetes treatment using Black Gram

For a milder type of diabetes, two tablespoons of germinated black gram, taken with half a cup of fresh bitter gourd juice and a teaspoon of honey, is said to be useful. It should be taken once daily for three to four months. A restriction should be placed on the intake of carbohydrates. Even in severe cases, regular use of this combination, with other precautions, is useful as a health-giving food for the prevention of various complications that may arise due to malnutrition in diabetics.

Diabetes treatment using Mango Leaves

The tender leaves of the mango tree are considered useful in diabetes. An infusion is prepared by soaking 15 gm of fresh leaves in 250 ml of water overnight, and squeezing them well in the water in the moming. This filtrate should be taken every morning to control early diabetes. As an alternative, the leaves should be dried in the shade, powdered and preserved for use when necessary. Half a teaspoon of this powder should be taken twice a day.

Diabetes treatment using Parslane

The seeds of parslane are useful in diabetes. A teaspoon of the seeds should be taken every day with half a cup of water for three to four months. It will increase the body’s own insulin and help in curing diabetes.

Diabetes treatment using Other Foods

Besides bitter gourd, certain other vegetables have been found useful in diabetes. These include string beans, cucumber, onion, and garlic. Tea made of the pods of string beans is valuable in diabetes.

Diet for Diabetes

Diabetes Mellitus : Home Remedies suggested by users

Dietary Guidelines for Diabetes Management

Three methods of treatment are generally followed depending on the individual and severity of the conditions.
1) Diet alone
2) Diet and Oral hypoglycaemic drugs and
3) Diet & insulin.

A mild diabetic can manage his disease with control on his diet alone. A severe diabetic requires dietary control along with insulin. However, whatever the form of controlling diabetes, regularity, routine and regulation should be strictly followed.

Types for Foods to be eaten for Diabetics

A diabetic should follow a low carbohydrates, low fat & moderate protein diet. The diet should be high in complex carbohydrates ie. High fibre diet like vegetables, whole legumes, whole wheat products, oats etc. Products made from refined wheat flours should be restricted. Salads can be consumed in a any quantities but high fat salad dressings should be avoided. Fruits can be taken as per recommended by your dietician, fruit juices should be avoided and whenever possible fruit should be taken with the skin eg. Apple, Pear etc. Preferably avoid fruits along with your meals and you can take it 2 hours after or before a meal.

Each meal should contain some source of protein as it doesn’t increase the blood sugar immediately
For eg. In breakfast you can consume oats porridge, which contains oats as well as milk. Proteins should not be taken too much in excess as it may lead to renal problems.

A diabetic patient should worry about the fat content of his diet. Many foods have some amount of invisible fats such as whole milk, egg yolk, and red meats.

Choose skimmed milk, egg whites, de-skinned chicken and use very little quantity of visible fats like oil, Clarified butter, butter in your daily diet.

Other Suggestions for Diabetes

Guidelines for Diabetics

-Exercise regularly, it keeps you fit and helps in controlling diabetes. Light exercise such as jogging, swimming or brisk walking are good.
-Do not walk bare feet. Decreased sensations can result in injury.
-Do not miss a meal after insulin or oral anti diabetic drugs.
-Do not change the dose of the anti-diabetic drugs, except under medical advice.
-Test urine regularly.

The main goal of nutrition for diabetics is to avoid highs & lows of blood sugar so you can feel well today and in the future. So it is important to remember these 3 points.
1) The timing of your meals & snacks is very important. Eat meals & snacks at the same time every day or as close to the same time as possible. Include a snack if you are exercising or if your blood sugar gets low. If these are happening regularly then consult your physician.
2) If you are taking insulin or a diabetic pill, always eat bed time snack. Stick to your serving size. If you eat more then what you are required to may raise your blood sugar.

Glycaemic Index of Foods

Glycaemic Index:
It is found that factors other then fibre may result in a food producing relatively flat blood profiles. These foods may favorably influence blood lipids. Classification of foods in terms of their glycaemic effects may facilitate application of this information in day-to-day management. Increase in levels of plasma insulin and glucose produced by various carbohydrate containing foods vary considerably from one food to another. For example, the post-prondial blood glucose response of glucose and potato of similar value is higher than that produced by bread or rice. Many such researches are being carried out to elicit the glycaemic response must also be considered. This system may be used as a part of the exchange system. The glycaemic index provides a means of identifying starchy foods with a lower glycaemic potential. (i.e foods less likely to cause a rise in blood glucose) that may be offered on trial to diabetics.

Monica Tatoiu is healthy again. Oriflame’s former manager has cured her breast cancer with the help of a miraculous naturist treatment. She has found out the incredible news while in USA, several days after celebrating her birthday.Â

“The tests I have done in America show I don’t have cancer anymore. In Romania, they told me I was sick and I was outgo surgery.” Monica Tatoiu said at Pro TV’s “Happy Hour”.

The US doctors diagnosis was completely different from the one made in Romania and Austria several months ago, as both countries’ specialists had recommended cutting one breast.Â

Monica Tatoiu believes the one that helped her defeat the disease was a pensioner in Resita who gave her a naturist recipe with royal jelly, acacia honey and pollen. She has followed the treatment with extreme strictness and positive results were soon to follow.Â

“Mixing bee products with physiological serum is a well recognized treatment that helps organism fight with cancer. It can only be followed under strict medical surveillance. Results can be miraculous but depend on each patient’s type of cancer,” says Doctor Codrut Tutu for Libertatea daily.

After finding out she had cancer, Monica Tatoiu has refused to undergo chemo and to go to surgery.

Oriflame’s former manager has repeatedly said she trusted God more than doctors and is convinced she would cure with prayer. When she was 23, Monica Tatoiu was diagnosed with cervical cancer and says she cured by prayer. “I believe in the curing force of prayers to God”.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – When back and neck aches strike, do you wonder whether to reach for a heating pad or an ice pack? A small study suggests it may not matter which one you choose.

Health

In fact, researchers say, it seems that neither heat nor cold will do much to ease back or neck pain, at least immediately.

That conclusion might sound surprising, since conventional wisdom holds that cold and heat therapy are effective ways to manage minor injuries such as sprains and strains.

Often, the advice is to use ice immediately after an injury, then heat in the days afterward.

But there has been relatively little research evidence to back up those recommendations. And few studies have compared heat and cold in helping to ease the short-term pain of strains.

The new study, published in the journal Academic Emergency Medicine, included 60 patients who came to the emergency room for minor strains to the back or neck, most often the back. All of the patients were given 400 milligrams of ibuprofen then randomly assigned to use either a heating pad or a cold pack for 30 minutes.

After the half-hour was up, the researchers found, patients in both groups typically reported mild pain relief.

But the average improvement, as measured by a standard pain-rating scale, was not enough to be “clinically meaningful,” according to lead researcher Dr. Gregory Garra, of Stony Brook University Medical Center in Stony Brook, New York.

And because both groups received ibuprofen, Garra told Reuters Health, what improvements there were may have been brought on by the painkiller.

He said the findings suggest that whether people choose heat or ice for back and neck strains, it is unlikely to bring quick benefits.

The study did not, however, follow up with patients in the days after their injuries, Garra noted. So it’s possible, he said, that either heat or cold, despite a lack of strong immediate effects, might have ultimately led to a quicker recovery.

And since patients in the study all had strains, the findings would not necessarily apply to other types of injuries, including sprains.

Even with the lack of strong benefits in this study, Garra said that people with minor back and neck pain can still feel free to try ice or heat — particularly if they prefer not to take pain medication.

The tactics are cheap, readily available and safe, and in some people they may work via the “placebo effect.” That is, they may perceive less pain simply because they’ve done something to treat it.

“It doesn’t matter which one you choose (heat or ice),” Garra said. “If there’s a placebo effect — then great. They are unlikely to do you any harm.”

Bloating is a general swelling in any part of the body, but is usually experienced in the abdominal area. Bloating can essentially cause an increase in the abdominal area. The diameter of the abdomen could increase either slightly or excessively.

Symptoms of Bloating

The characteristic symptom of bloating is tightness in the chest, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting. There is a significant change in the bowel movements. The stools become dark and could even be bloody. The consistency of stool may change, becoming either watery and loose or hard and constipated.

Due to the excessive gas inside the stomach, there could be increased burping and flatulence. You will experience discomfort in the abdomen and your appetite could decrease significantly. Due to the decreased appetite and discomfort, you may also lose weight. Bloating may also cause you to feel incessant fatigue, cramping in the stomach, and breathing problems.

In certain cases the cramps and the pain caused by bloating are so severe that it seems you are experiencing pain in your heart. If the pain occurs towards the right hand side of the body, it can be often mistaken for appendicitis or stones in the gall bladder. Hiccups are another symptom of bloating.

Causes of Bloating

There are several causes of bloating; however, the most common is the accumulation of gas and liquids in the intestines. There are also specific diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract which may cause bloating. Ailments such as Crohn’s Disease, may cause obstruction of the bowels and may contribute to the bloating symptoms.

When food is not ingested properly, or water intake is not adequate, that too is a cause of bloating. The excessive intake of fatty foods can cause the formation of a layer of fat on the body, causing pressure and bloating.

Intolerance towards foods like lactose, fructose, and proteins can disrupt the digestion process, causing the release of gases and liquids and ultimately resulting in bloating. Some of the other causes of bloating are food allergies, overeating, swallowing of air while eating, irritable bowel syndrome, obstruction of the bowels, rapid emptying of the bowels, constipation, menstruation, and cysts in the ovaries.

Home Remedies for Bloating

Bloating is usually not considered a very serious disorder and can be managed with home remedies. The most effective home remedies for bloating are herbal teas. You can brew chamomile, ginger, peppermint or basil tea. Another option is to add a few drops of clove oil to a glass of water and drink it every morning. This will help improve digestion and release excessive gases. Eucalyptus oil can also be used instead of clove oil.

Another effective natural remedy is to boil one tea spoon of ground cinnamon with water. To improve the taste, you can add some honey.

Diet for Bloating

When you are feeling bloated, you may feel abdominal discomfort but don’t stop eating. Drink a lot of water and avoid carbonated drinks. Eat foods which are seedless and have been peeled and cooked properly.

Other Suggestions for Bloating

Exercising regularly can help alleviate the symptoms of bloating.

No matter how much you care about your looks and no matter what you do or do not do to make yourself look better, everyone is scared of the ‘B’ word. Blemishes, a nightmare for anyone who cares enough about their skin, can happen to anyone and could occur anywhere on the body.

Nobody likes having blemishes, especially on the parts of the skin where they can be visible. Blemishes are essentially marks or patches on the skin which are either discolored or over pigmented, making them appear different from the rest of the skin. Blemishes also include acne, blackheads, whiteheads, and other marks.

Â

Causes of Blemishes

Very often we are born with several blemishes. Some of these may fade over the years, but others may not. Some blemishes, especially those which are caused due to scratching, pinching or picking of acne, can increase over the time. In fact, some of these blemishes may remain on our skin forever. There are some discolorations, also often referred to as the ‘port wine stains’, which can be on our skin right from the birth and cannot be treated.

Home Remedies for Blemishes

There are several remedies that can be used for lightening blemishes. With time and regular usage of these home remedies, it is possible that your blemishes may entirely go away. There are also some home remedies which can help blemishes from occurring on your skin.

• Camphor has long been known for its properties that help ease headaches. However, camphor also has the ability to lighten blemishes. Take about seven parts of the extract of camphor and add to it two parts of the extract of almonds, one part of sandalwood powder, and dilute it to thirty parts with rosewater. Using a ball of cotton, rub this weak solution on your entire face every day.

• Orange peel contains a lot of vitamin C and can be used to lighten the blemishes on the skin. Take the peel of a few oranges and dry them in the sun. Once they are dry, grind them into a fine powder. To this powder, add the juice of a lemon and a teaspoon of rosewater to make a paste. Apply this paste on the affected areas to improve skin texture and remove the blemishes. This remedy is especially useful for pockmarks.

Other Suggestions for Blemishes

Another great remedy to treat blemishes is to add one part each of lemon juice, milk powder and honey together. To this, add a few drops of almond oil and mix well. Now apply this paste on the affected area.{jcomments on}

Belching or burping is also medically referred as eructation or ructus. Essentially it is a process of releasing gas from the digestive tract through the mouth. A typical odor or sound may also accompany the process of gas release. Belching is a common universal phenomenon and not limited to few people with any specific disorder. Infants to older adults belch or burp to expel air that has been swallowed in excess. Belching relieves the abdomen of discomfort caused due to the excess air.

Belching can also form as a habit to many people and such belching or burping may not be related to the accumulation of air in their stomachs. Instinctively people resort to belching on account of any form of abdominal discomfort to expel gas and ease the existing discomfort.

Though it sounds like a simple exercise, technically belching is a co-coordinated activity. For egs: the larynx is raised to ensure no liquid or food passing with the air from the stomach get into the lungs and this process also relaxes the upper cardia (esophageal sphincter) such that air can pass more easily from the esophagus into the throat. The lower cardia (esophageal sphincter) also needs to open so that air can pass from the stomach into the esophagus. During these activities, the diaphragm descends such that it increases abdominal pressure and decreases pressure in the chest similar to taking a breath. The change in pressure ensures air flows from the stomach in the abdomen to the esophagus in the chest.

Symptoms of Belching

Some known symptoms of burping

- Burping Sounds
– Odor accompanying burping

Causes of Belching

The key causes that lead to burping

- Eating or drinking too fast such that excessive air is swallowed in the process
– Consumption of carbonated drinks such as : soft drinks, champagne, beer may cause burping in which case the gas released is from the drink itself
– Certain disorders such as Gastroesophageal reflux disease may cause involuntary burping
– Certain established eating patterns or habits lead to burping as a sign of completing a meal.

Remedies for Belching

Some remedies that work in treating belching

- Eating slowly or have small meals
– Avoiding chewing gum and carbonated drinks
– Excessive consumption of onions and chocolates may also cause burping.Avoid such foods
– Avoid alcohol especially among individuals suffering from chronic belching or excessive belching
– Reducing stress, following exercise tips from medical practitioners and inducing relaxation can help treat belching

Diet for Belching

To reduce belching avoid gulping food or drink too rapidly.

- Some foods may initiate the belching process such as milk and sugars.
– Certain types of vegetables and fruits containing a particular type of starch are not well digested by the stomach but are effective tools to treat bacteria in the stomach such as: beans, lentils, cabbage, bananas, apricots, prunes, onions and sprouts. It is advisable to avoid such vegetables and fruits to prevent belching.
– Foods made from whole grains may also cause gas and consequent belching or burping.

Suggestions for Belching

Weight loss, avoid tight clothes and maintain a food diary

Treating excessive intestinal gas depends on various factors such as: diagnosing the root cause and treatment may include dietary changes and /or medications that reduce the amount of gas.

Bacterial vaginitis is not a STD; however it can be caused through sexual intercourse. It can also occur among lesbians through exchange of vaginal fluids.

Symptoms of Bacterial vaginitis

Signs and symptoms

Some of the signs and symptoms of bacterial vaginitis are as follows.- There could be changes in the odor and colour of the vaginal discharge.- Itching or irritation in vagina.- Pain while urinating.- Light bleeding from vagina.- Fishy odor and grayish white discharge from vagina; especially after sexual intercourse.

Bacterial vaginitis Causes

The main cause of bacterial vaginitis is an overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria and the Gardnerella organism. Generally in a vagina there are more Lactobacillus bacteria than bad bacteria like Gardnerella Vaginalis and Mobiluncus. When the number of bad bacteria increases in vagina, they upset the balance. and this imbalance causes bacterial vaginitis

This imbalance could be caused due to various reasons such as

-Repeated sexual intercourse in a short duration which leads to a rise in the vaginal pH and results in growth of bacteria and infectionlike symptoms.

-Moisture (for long period of time) in the vaginal area caused by restrictive and nonabsorbent synthetic clothing. -Use of chemicals that may cause irritation.-Use of antibiotics that disrupt the balance of the bacterial environment in the vagina.

Remedies for Bacterial vaginitis

Treating Naturally

- Eat or apply plain yogurt directly to the vagina. Alternatively, a tampon soaked in yogurt can be inserted.

- Garlic has antibacterial and antifungal properties. Garlic can be taken internally or can be applied directly on the vagina.- Use calendula herb to reduce the inflammation.- Herbs like tea tree oil, black walnut, Echinacea and goldenseal are effective in treating bacterial vaginitis.- Use boric acid douche to acidify vaginal pH.- Douche to reduce inflammation Add 12 tsp of calendula to boiling water, steep the mixture and cool it before use.- Soak a tea bag in water and cool it in refrigerator and then apply it to the vagina.

Diet for Bacterial vaginitis

Healthy Diet

Eat a healthy diet comprising of fresh fruits and vegetables. Include flax seed oil and meal in your diet. Drink lots of water. Eat non vegetarian foods like meat, poultry and fish. Eat whole grains. Avoid alcohol, refined flour, processed foods, sugar, coffee and saturated fats.

Suggestion for Bacterial vaginitis

Other ways to deal with the problem

-Use well washed under garments.

- Maintain good toilet hygiene.- Always take a warm bath.-Avoid irritants like scented tampons.- Use condoms during sexual intercourse.- Always keep vaginal area clean.- Clean your vagina area thoroughly after having sex.- Avoid tight clothes and wear cotton panties.- Avoid douching as it disturbs the balance of the microorganisms within the vagina.- Be sure to clean diaphragms, cervical caps and spermicide applicators after each use.- Take care to clean

Arteriosclerosis refers to the thickening of the walls of the arteries. It has become a common ailment in modem times, accounting for much of the disability and high death rate, more so among older people. Arteriosclerosis is usually preceded by atherosclerosis, a kind of fatty infiltration in the inner lining of the blood vessel walls. The most risky places for such degeneration are the coronary vessels of the heart and the arteries of the brain. Arteriosclerosis results in the loss of elasticity of the blood vessels and a narrowing of the smaller arteries, which interferes with the free circulation of the blood.

Arteriosclerosis symptoms

Inadequate blood supply in the legs

The symptoms of arteriosclerosis vary according to the arteries involved. Signs of inadequate blood supply generally appear first in the legs. There may be numbness and coldness in the feet, and cramps and pains in the legs even after light exercise.

For coronary arteries involved, sharp pains mat be felt

If the coronary arteries are involved, the patient may have sharp pains, characteristic of angina pectoris. When arteries leading to the brain are involved, the vessel may burst, causing haemorrhage in the brain tissues. A cerebral vascular stroke, with partial or complete paralysis on one side of the body, may result if there is blockage with a blood clot. It may also lead to loss of memory and a confused state of mind in elderly people. If arteries leading to the kidneys are involved, the patient may suffer from high blood pressure and kidney disorders.

Causes of Arteriosclerosis

Lack of physical exercise and a high fat diet

The most important causes of arteriosclerosis are lack of physical exercise, excessive intake of white sugar, refined foods, and a high fat diet rich in cholesterol.

Obesity, diabetes and stress

Other diseases such as high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes may also cause hardening of the arteries. Emotional stress plays an important part, and heart attacks are more common during periods of mental and emotional disturbances, particularly in those engaged in sedentary occupations.

Heredity

Heredity also plays its role and this disease runs in families.

Home Remedies for Arteriosclerosis

Arteriosclerosis treatment using Lemon

One of the most effective home remedies for arteriosclerosis is the lemon peel. It is believed to be one of the richest sources of vitamin P. It strengthens the entire arterial system. Shredded lemon peel of one lemon may be added to soups and stews, or sprinkled over salads. To make a medicine, the peel of one or two lemons may be cut up finely, covered with warm water and allowed to stand for about twelve hours. A teaspoon may be taken every three hours, or immediately before or after a meal.

Arteriosclerosis treatment using Parsley

Parsley is another effective remedy for arteriosclerosis. It contains elements which help to maintain the blood vessels, particularly the capillaries, and arterial system in a healthy condition. It may be taken as a tea: a teaspoon of dry parsley may be allowed to simmer gently in a cupful of water for a few minutes. This can be taken two to three times daily.

Arteriosclerosis treatment using Vegetable Juices

Beet juice, taken daily, has been found valuable in arteriosclerosis. It is an excellent solvent for inorganic calcium deposits. The juices of carrots and spinach are also beneficial if taken once a day. These juices can be taken individually-500 ml, or as a combination. When taken as a combination, they should be in the following proportion: carrots-300 ml and spinach-200 ml to prepare 500 ml of juice.

Arteriosclerosis treatment using Honey

Honey is also considered beneficial in the treatment of arteriosclerosis. It is easily digested and assimilated. The patient should take a glass of water with one teaspoon each of honey and lemon juice in it, before going to bed. He can also take it if he wakes up at night.

Arteriosclerosis treatment using Ishabgul

The herb psyllium husk, botanically known as Plantagoovata, has been found valuable in arteriosclerosis. The oil of the seeds of this plant should be used. It contains fifty per cent of linoleic acid, an unsaturated fat, and is, therefore, helpful in the prevention and treatment of this disease.

Arteriosclerosis treatment using Garlic and Onions

Recent investigations have shown that garlic and onions have a preventive effect on the development of arteriosclerosis. They should be included in the daily diet, either raw or cooked, according to individual taste.

Arteriosclerosis diet

Juice fast and then diet of seeds, grains etc

To begin with, the patient should resort to a juice fast for five to seven days. Fresh, raw vegetables and juices of seasonal fruits may be taken three times a day. After the juice fast, the patient should take a diet consisting of seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables, and fruits, with emphasis on raw foods. Further short fasts of juices may be undertaken at intervals of three months or so, depending on the progress being made. The patient should take several small meals instead of a few large ones.

Avoid hydrogenated fats and excess of saturated fats

He should avoid all hydrogenated fats and an excess of saturated fats, such as butter, cream, clarified butter, and animal fat. He should also avoid meat, salt, and all refined and processed foods, condiments, sauces, pickles, strong tea, coffee, white sugar, white flour, and all products made from them.

Use olive oil, flax seed oil for cooking

Vegetable oils, particularly safflower oil, flax seed oil, and olive oil, should be used as a cooking medium.

Other Arteriosclerosis treatments

Warm-water enema

During the juice fast undertaken for the first five to seven days, a warm-water enema should be used daily to cleanse the bowels.

Avoid smoking

Smoking, if habitual, should be given up as it constricts the arteries and aggravates the condition.

Do outdoor exercise and avoid excess mental stress

The patient should undertake plenty of outdoor exercise and learn to take mental stress and worries in his stride.

Take prolonged immersion bath

A prolonged immersion bath at room temperature should be taken at bedtime on alternate days. This bath should be administered in a bath tub properly fitted with a hot and cold water connection. The bath tub should be filled with water at a temperature ranging from 33.4°C to 36.7°C, and the patient should lie in it for an hour or so. The head should be kept cold with a cold compress.
